I went to a political caucus meeting two nights ago. If you've never been to one I suggest you give it a try. You'll get to see the following types of people:
- Old people: Lots of them.
- Rule sticklers: These guys believe it's their job to tell everyone they're not following the bylaws. Don't they have anything better to read at home?
- Candidate haters: You can count on them to tell you all about how the last party representative nominated into office did such a horrible job, but they never get around to talking about the positive progress made during the term...not that it matters anyway, it's all in the past. Which brings me to the final type of person...
- Masters of irrelevancy: These are hard to catch. You usually find out who they are after they've finished speaking their mind and you may think to yourself, "Why on earth is he talking about that, it has nothing to do with anything we're talking about" or perhaps, "There goes five minutes of my life that I won't get back". They may as well tell us how much they like cats because it would've carried the same weight during the meeting but taken less time to endure.
The fortunate thing about all of this is that these people are all there to make a difference at the 'grass roots' level of government. I can appreciate that. I can also appreciate that if all people were alike it would be twice as boring. I'm glad I went.

I would enjoy watching this crowd and the whole process.
This experience can probably give you insight into people's ignorance or irrelevant single-mindedness on politics. I live with a yellow dog democrat, whose everyday opinions and ideals are the opposite of the party he supports. It makes no sense to me. Oh yeah, he will be 89 when he votes.
Well, you're in Utah, so this must have been a Republican caucus. The Democratic caucuses I've been to were disappointing enough, but not quite so boring. Maybe you should try the other party? >:)
I'm sure some people loved the meeting. There was a fair share of conflict partially because two precincts were being brought together into one; good-ole boys from one side versus good-ole boys on the other side. I wasn't too impressed, and I personally knew 3/4 of the people in the room. Maybe I will try a Dem caucus next time, just for kix.
